Mouse Cheese Plates

Yesterday I was so tired I wasn't even aware of how tired I was. I fell asleep as I was painting a cheese plate. When I awoke, my cheek was on the front of it. I started to laugh as it was so funny to me because the cheese plates I make are funny. They are mostly of mice doing funny things.

I was making one of these plates for a man who had bought one from me 25 years ago. It had accidentally broken and he was beside himself. He wrote me, "Would it be possible that I could make another one for him?" I get this response often because the cheese plates are humorous and people get attached to them. I love making them because it is so neighborly. It is a little like bringing tomatoes over to a neighbor when you have an abundance of ripe beauties, or maybe it is a little like sharing a corny joke.

I have made hundreds of these plates over the years and I continue to love making them. This is true of all of my art work. I love making my art because I have spent a long, long time developing in myself a sense of love and service in what I do. The people who purchase my work generally feel the same way about their life and work, and they resonate with a kindred spirit. So the art I make is about being in a particular heart space, and I am gaining the strength to write about this because it is important to me and I feel it is important to others as well. If I can vocalize it, then others may be able to vocalize it also. And in this way, a good thing becomes even better.
